How to Assess the Real Strengths of a Microfinance Institution
On the CGAP blog, David Mac Dougall writes about assessing the risks of investing in microfinance institutions (MFIs). The financial crisis has made investors and asset managers increasingly sensitive to risk in microfinance and all areas of finance. According to Mac Dougall, lenders and investors worry about whether MFIs can survive. They weigh the risks by applying sophisticated analysis to the MFIs’ financial performance and asset quality. A spreadsheet with numerous ratios and graphs serves as the standard tool. Unfortunately, such efforts can lead to erroneous conclusions because their focus isn’t wide enough. This program will explore policy options for governments to accelerate progress toward education goals by partnering with the private sector. The aim is to examine methods for making pro-active, contextual and contemporary policies for the education sector. The program will provide a platform from which senior education policy makers can examine and share innovations with project managers and private providers. It will focus on case studies from a range of countries, including those with established policies and practices as well as countries in the early stages of working with private providers.
